We’re delighted to have completed a recent project for a client on a prestigious new housing development in the North of England.

This large-scale operation required our specialist team to lay resin bonded walkways at the new Maritime Apartments complex based in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria.

As part of a 5 million pound investment of the Barrow Island area, four of the region’s most historic streets – Ship Street, Barque Street, Brig Street and Sloop Street have undergone major redevelopment work to create affordable housing stock.

Maritime Apartments now comprises of a total of 318 self-contained living spaces, (152 one bedroom apartments, 152 two bedroom apartments and 14 three bedroom apartments) with occupancy currently close to capacity.

In October the team from Midland Decorative Surfaces laid 2,400 square meters of Chinese bauxite to create a walkway system through the communal garden area at the complex (pictured), providing a smart and hard wearing surface that offers a great finishing touch to the development.

We chose to use a Resin Bound Surfacing system for this project as it represents a cost effective alternative to the more traditional surfacing materials, offering a hard wearing surface that requires virtually no maintenance, is environmentally friendly, and allows for a wide range of decorative styles.

Resin Bound and Bonded Surfacing systems can be applied to most surfaces and can be completed relatively quickly, minimising any disruption to our clients. We offer a vast range of professional installation service for all types of Resin Bound and Bonded gravel surfaces, all at very competitive prices.

Creative Thinking Saves The Day – Driveway Resurfacing

Solihull driveway resurfacing

It’s only natural that most driveways will need resurfacing at some point, but finding an exact match to what you’ve already got isn’t always easy. Maybe the original material no longer exists, or the colours aren’t available – whatever the problem, you’ll probably need expert help to sort it out.

At Midland Decorative Surfaces, our most recently accepted challenge was at a property in Solihull that had a pre-existing surface on the drive that needed refreshing. After trying to source the same stone, it became apparent that it had become discontinued and we needed to think smart.

The client liked the colour and style of the material he already had, so after getting our creative caps on we created a mix using three different aggregates to mimic the discontinued flint he already had down. We laid the resin bound system at 18mm thick, covering around 300 square metres of driveway and the results were superb.

The colour and style perfectly matched the combination of red brick and wooden doors, while the neat and tidy effect of the resin system emphasised the curb appeal of the buildings. Not only did the client get to have an updated, refreshed and high-quality recovering, but the project also highlighted how a bit of creative thinking can save the day.

Attractive Surface Installations That Compliment Your Property

Posted By :

We are often required to lay external decorative surfaces that are suited to the look and feel of the buildings and gardens close by.

This usually includes choosing materials and colouring that can offer a close or complimentary match with the brick or paintwork used in surrounding buildings, matching surfaces to external fittings and features or applying a colour scheme or pattern style chosen by the customer.

We recently completed a resin-bound driveway installation at a private property in the Cannock area where the client asked for the new surface to be as sympathetic as possible to the beautiful house and gardens that would sit around it.

To meet the customer’s expectations our team used a 6mm terracotta stone that matched brilliantly with the attractive traditional red brick the home was built with and contrasted nicely with the surrounding flowerbeds and grass verges.

As the photo above shows, the results look absolutely superb and show how a well-chosen decorative surface can really complement a property and tie in with the existing aesthetics.

At Midland Decorative Surfaces we have completed a wide range of resin bound surface applications that are tailored to the area surrounding the laying site. These have included everything from domestic driveways, paths and patios to courtyards, landscaping schemes and public passageways.

The materials we use for our Resin Bound and Resin Bonded driveway installations are not only highly customisable but also extremely hard wearing, typically lasting between 8 and 15 years depending on usage and with next to no regular maintenance.

What’s more, we can usually lay a new surface on top of existing facades such as concrete and tarmac without the need for excavation, producing a speedy and cost effective driveway installation with style!

Extra Curb Appeal in Coventry

A house is usually one of the biggest purchases you will ever make, so naturally, you will invest a lot of time, effort and money into looking after your home and making it look as good as possible. Countless hours are spent redecorating, choosing furniture and accessories for the interior and plenty of care should also be put into the exterior aesthetics.

When you welcome guests to your home, or perhaps you are looking to sell your property, remember, first impressions count. With that old saying in mind, it’s well worth doing everything you can to up the curb appeal of your home. A neglected exterior could turn off guests or potential buyers from as far away as across the street.

A huge part of making sure your house looks as appealing as possible on first impressions is not only caring for the brickwork, but investing in a beautiful, low maintenance driveway solution. Whilst commonly used commercially, resin bound and resin bonded surfacing systems are also increasingly popular solutions for a wide range of domestic driveways, paths, patios, courtyards, landscaping schemes and walkways. With a life expectancy of as much as 15 years and a practically maintenance-free surface, it’s easy to understand why.

At Midland Decorative Surfaces, we take great pride in helping bring great curb appeal to domestic properties throughout the country. We recently finished a project at a beautiful house in Coventry. The property, which also included separate garages and outbuildings, was blessed with a long driveway, allowing visitors plenty of time to make their first impressions.

To perfectly complement the Rhine Gold exterior of the house, we completed the installation of resin bound driveway surface, using fine 6mm trent gravel. The gravel contains a mixture of rounded, half rounded and angular stones in various subtle brown, white and greys to create a natural effect. Whilst resin bound surfaces benefit from the aesthetics of a gravel driveway, the stones are bound in place, so there’s no need for tiresome sweeping on a weekly basis!

The Perfect Driveway Option – Resin Bound Stone

Posted By :

Did you know that there are two types of driveway surfacingoptions that are perfect for beautiful looking, low maintenance solutions? They are called resin bonded and resin bound driveways.

Resin bonded surfaces are made from a graded aggregate that is directly applied onto a natural or coloured resin, which creates a textured surface. This style gives the look of loose gravel and requires occasional sweeping.

The other popular type of surface is resin bound, which is produced from a blend of graded aggregates that have been mixed with a clear resin and given a smooth level finish. It is a fully bound system with no loose bits and can be the more durable of the two options.

At Midland Decorative Surfaces, we have just completed a 400 square metre resin bound driveway for a home in Coventry, West Midlands.

The Expert Guide to Installing Resin Based Surfacing

Resin based surfacing is a fairly new solution on the paving market, though it has become increasingly popular for homeowners wishing to renovate their driveways. Resin bonded or resin bound surfaces combine natural gravel aggregates with a durable resin. Forming an extremely low-maintenance surface, resin bonded and bound systems offer a long-lasting and cost-effective alternative to a decorative driveway.

Here we’ll look at how to successfully install a resin based surface to maximise its lifespan and usage. Although each specification will be different depending on the products used, here’s what you might expect when installing resin surfacing in your driveway:

Resin bound

1 – Preparing your existing surface
One of the great things about resin surfacing is that it can be applied directly over your existing driveway surface or layered onto a sub-base if required.

For those of you laying the resin system directly onto an existing surface, ensure that the surface is dry and free of weeds or algae. Any cracks should be widened into the shape of a ‘v’ with a stone saw.
If you’ll be applying the system onto a sub-base it’s advisable to make sure that your edgings are fixed in place (you can use sharp sand and cement for this), and that they rise 15-20mm above the sub-base to allow for the resin surface. This will create a more stable foundation for a longer-lasting resin surface.

2 – Choosing the best materials

  • Sub-base: for your sub-base you may want to use 150mm of MOT type1, which is made from a range of easily-compacted aggregates. This would need to be rolled down with a vibrating roller until the aggregates have bonded. Concrete or tarmac can then be layered as a base-coat to provide stability before laying the resin mixture on top.
  • Aggregates: we provide a range of aggregates to suit your driveway, in various colours and sizes. You can browse our resin bonded and resin bound aggregates, which offer a high-quality and natural appearance.
  • Resin: you can choose from a standard or UV stable resin depending on the aggregates you’re using. UV stable resin will prevent certain coloured aggregates fading in the sunlight over time – choose UV stable resin for black, beige and silver aggregates.

3 – Mixing the aggregates and the resin
Tools you need to mix your materials include a forced action mixer, a plasterer’s paddle and drill. Other equipment you’ll need includes white spirit, a wheelbarrow, a plasterer’s float a bucket and gloves.

Every resin kit would need 100kg of aggregate – 75kg of 2-5mm stone and 25kg 1-3mm stone.

With standard resin kits, you simply mix part A and B in your bucket until there is a creamy consistency. The same goes for the UV stable resin, apart from adding the catalyst in with part A before whisking with B.
Then you can put the aggregates in the forced action mixer and mix it dry for about 30 seconds to remove excess dust. Add in the resin and mix until all the stones are covered in the resin. You can also use around 2kg of kiln dried sand into the mixture for added strength.
6 – Laying down the resin surfacing
Working your way from one end to the exit, rake out the mixture on the surface then use a trowel to flatten it evenly. Each new part of the mixture added should be overlapped with the last, which will slightly elevate the dry edges.

Cleaning your trowel every now and then with white spirit will stop the mixture sticking to the trowel and make it easier to flatten down the surface smoothly.

Each mix should cover roughly 4 square metres at a 15mm thickness. The mixture can begin to set quite rapidly depending on the temperature outside, sometimes in 10 minutes in hot weather. However, you won’t be able to walk on the surface until around 4 hours after laying it down, or use a vehicle on the surface until 24 hours after.

The public spaces we walk through every day – streets we take to work, parks we spend time relaxing in and centres we use to shop – are key parts of our environment. Public spaces offer great social benefits to people and organisations around the world, and give local authorities a range of options to develop something interesting and unique.

Resin bound and bonded surfaces are formed from a mixture of natural aggregates set in a durable resin solution. They provide a premium performance for public environments, since they are long-lasting and resilient against varied weather conditions and weeds. Quick and simple to install and maintain, the porous resin bound and bonded surfacing is environmentally friendly and SuDS compliant.

Resin surfaces also allow for versatile design options – you can choose from a wide range of colours and create attractive patterns to suit the surroundings. Here we’ve collected some examples of innovative public spaces throughout the world, to inspire your landscaping project:

The Value of Adding a Resin Bound Driveway to Your Property

Posted By :

There has never been a better time to add a driveway to your property and in particular, a resin bound driveway.  Across the UK, more and more homeowners and businesses are looking to convert the exterior space at the front of their property into a more practical use and here’s why:

  • resin bonded drivewaysAdding a driveway will improve the appeal and practicality of your home and could add as much as 10% to the value of your property.
  • As on-street parking permits increase in price, homeowners are seeing the value of turning their gardens into driveways to avoid the costly price hikes and make better use of their available space.
  • Driveways are easier to maintain than gardens and can save you time and money in the long run.
  • Businesses are increasingly having to cater for the rise in staff commuting via car, so it makes sense to convert as much of the exterior space available into driveways and car parking areas to accommodate the workforce and visitors, not to mention offering a tidy environment compared to garden areas which require more maintenance.
